– As the host of the European Team Athletics Championships, the Silesian Stadium rose to the challenge and proved that it is a trustworthy partner in the organization of such events. I would like to congratulate and thank the Marshal for the intense and very fruitful cooperation. Together, we have managed to prepare the championships that are truly worthy of this royal discipline. I am more than confident that the Silesian Stadium will be the perfect place for the event. After all, this facility has an enormous potential that should be put to good use – says Dobromir Karamarinov, acting as The President of the European Athletics Association.

As stated by the European Athletics Interim President during the press conference, in 2027 the European Athletics Team Championships will also take place in the Silesian Stadium as a test event.

The Silesian Stadium has become a serious candidate for the organization of international events of the highest rank. I am incredibly proud of it, both as a marshal and a resident of Silesia. It shows that the facility meets all the requirements and is perfectly adapted to host the world’s elite sportsmen. I would also like to thank the representatives of the European federation for the trust they have placed in us by granting us the rights to organize such a prestigious event. Furthermore, for their support during the European Team Athletics Championships Silesia 2021 – say Jakub Chełstowski, Marshal of the Silesian Voivodeship.

In August 2020, the Silesian Stadium became the official National Athletics Stadium. Less than a month ago, the Relay World Championships were held here, and today is the final day of the struggle for the title of the European team champion. Athletes will come to the facility again on June 20 during the Janusz Kusociński Memorial, and then on September 5 during the Kamila Skolimowska Memorial. The Silesian has been hosting these international tournaments for three years now.

I am moved, as it shows dreams do come true when you work hard towards them. Our level of organisation matches the excellent level of our athletes’ achievements. The cooperation with Mr Marshal is going very well and I believe we will continue to follow the road of development of the beatiful sport that athletics is – added Dr Henryk Olszewski, President of the Polish Athletics Association.

Since 1934, the European Athletics Championships are organized under the auspices of the European federation. For the first time, competition of this rank will be held in Poland.

The Olympic Stadium in Munich will host the following year’s competition. And in 2024, it will take place in Rome. Noteworthy, the Silesian Stadium also applied to organize the event. By the decision of the European Athletics Association, Chorzów will host the European Athletics Championships in 2028.

During the European Athletics Championships, the Polish national team has won so far 54 gold medals. The first medalist in our national colors was Janusz Kusociński, who in 1934 achieved the silver in the 5,000-meter race. The most medals for Poland, as many as 10, won Irena Szewińska competing in sprint and long jump runs. The hammer throw is the discipline in which the Poles triumphed most often – they took the podium 16 times.
