The Polish national team will try to defend the champion title at the Silesian Stadium

The competition for the title of the best athletics team in Europe will begin in three days’ time at the National Athletics Stadium. It is the Polish team that will defend the gold medal.

During the European Athletics Team Championships Silesia 2021, which will be held this weekend at the Silesian Stadium, we will see teams from France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Portugal, Spain and Poland. Ukraine withdrew from the competition. During the training camp two cases of COVID19 were detected among the athletes.

It is worth reminding that the current European Champion in Athletics is the Polish team, which will defend the title in a strong line-up. The team will be joined by, among others, Michał Haratyk – the European champion in shot put, Malwina Kopron – the World Championships bronze medalist in the hammer throw, Paweł Fajdek – the World Championships gold medalist in the hammer throw and Piotr Lisek – the world vice-champion in pole vault.

Among the foreign stars of athletics we will see, e.g. Johannes Vetter from Germany – the gold medalist of the World Championships in javelin throw, who also won in his discipline during the last year’s edition of the Kamila Skolimowska Memorial at the Silesian Stadium. In triple jump we will see, among others, Pedro Pichardo representing Portugal, who won gold during the European Indoor Championships in Toruń in 2021. Fans of high jump, in turn, will be able to cheer on the multiple gold medalist from Italy, Gianmarco Tamberi.

The best athletes of our continent will compete at the Silesian Stadium for the highest place on the podium, often surpassing their own limits. I believe that the European Athletics Team Championships will go down in history not only due to the excellent results of the athletes, but also as a professionally organized event. The event will be attended by 7 600 spectators. The entry is free! The entrance to the stadium will be possible through gates no. 2, 3 and 5, on Saturday from 14:00 and on Sunday from 11:30. A special guide has been prepared for fans who plan to attend the event at the Silesian Stadium.

The Silesian Stadium is nearing completion of final preparations and arrangement of individual zones for players, media and VIP guests.

We have made every effort to prepare these championships at an international level. I hope that everything will go according to the plan and we will be evaluated well. I am convinced that the athletes will provide us with the maximum level of sporting excitement. The athletes will compete in the following events: hammer throw, discus throw, javelin throw, shot put, pole vault, high jump, long jump, triple jump, 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 3000m, 5000m races, 100m, 110m, 400m hurdles, 3000m steeplechase and 4x100m and 4x400m relays.

The ambassadors of European Athletics Team Championships Silesia 2021 are Anita Włodarczyk, Justyna Święty-Ersetic, Ewa Swoboda and Paweł Fajdek.

During the two-day competition, the athletes will be cheered on by a unique team of animal mascots, including: Maji the cheetah, Sprinter the ostrich, Julian the lemur and Lunani the giraffe.
